Commissions
Q: TeMika, I would like for you to create a portrait (or mural) for me. How much will it cost?
A: The cost of my customized art (portrait or mural) is generally based on a combination of factors. These prices are based on price per square inch, materials cost and the labor that will be required to complete the requested work. I reserve the right to modify my base price for special conditions, such as location, travel expenses, special requests, etc. However, as an example, a portrait that is 24x36 may cost around $300. Smaller paintings may cost a little less per square foot than a larger one; a painting may cost more than a drawing.
Q: I love your work, but paying that much for a commission is not in my budget right now.
A: Well you are in luck! Although, I do maintain my stated prices, I am willing to work with you depending on your situation. If it is necessary, I can work out a deposit and installment plan to allow the work to be created for you as you request. This is not my preferred method of payment, but we can work it out.
Q: For a portrait, what do you need? Do I need to sit in front of you for hours and hours and be still?
A: I have been creating portraits for a long time. I love to draw people! I do create caricatures and quick sketches, but for more detail projects you can simply provide pictures. I will give you a concept sketch and possibly some of the development stages along the way. When I am commissioned to start a portrait I ask for two things:
1. Your PATIENCE to answer lots of questions about the person or yourself.
2. Lots of pictures (the more the merrier)
I ask a lot of questions because it allows me to get to know the person I am drawing. Answering the “Who What Where Why & How” about a person will give me ideas of what to include in the portrait to make it “come alive”. Providing me with a lot of pictures will allow me to view the person in different lighting, with different expressions/emotions, in different environments. All of these things tell about who a person is and it comes through in a portrait. The old saying is true: A picture is worth a thousand words.
Q: How do you work when it comes to murals?
A: Each project will be different based on where the project is, the environment that it will be created in, etc. We will have to discuss the details of the project, but I will provide a concept sketch and an estimated cost based of labor and materials before we begin work.
